Swimming Achievements

  • Swam competitively from 1980 - 2000
  • Made National final level from 1988 through to 2000
  • Gold medal winner at European Youth Games 1991
  • Double Gold, one Silver & one Bronze medal at World Masters Championships in 1998
  • Double Gold & one Silver medal at the European Masters Championships in 1999
  • Captained home club Rotherham Metro, Sheffield & District Team, Yorkshire Team in addition to England North East & the England Team.

Coaching

Mark has coached since 1993. He started at Rotherham Metro as an assistant coach, working with at Junior League age group level. This was during the period when the Rotherham team made the national final five times including one league win.

He then moved to Trident SC in 1998 as Head Coach; the club gained multiple successes at national level including a junior national champion. In 2001, Mark was appointed head coach to the Derbyshire ASA team and still does this role.

He moved to Head up the Derventio programme in 2003. He also worked as Head Coach to the Midland team from 2003 to 2005.

Mark first took British Swimming duty as a coach on the World Class Start Camps in 2002.

He has worked on various National Event camps and teams throughout the last six years at Derventio including the following:

  • Coach to European Junior Team 2007 & 2008
  • Head Coach to the month long British Swimming End of Year Tours to Asia & Australasia in 2006/7 & 2007/8 seasons

Mark has directly coached 14 swimmers to British Swimming Teams and programmes during the time at Derventio. He is also a member of the British Swimming Select Coaches group that enables advanced CPD opportunities to further progress the coaching in the programme; the opportunities include funded conferences in Australia & the US along with funding to visit high performing programmes around the world.

Coaching

Simon started coaching in September 1999 for Nova Centurion as assistant coach to the Bassetlaw Development and B-Squad. In September 2000 he was appointed coach to the Development and B-squad and looked after the movement between these groups and the talent identification of swimmers to join the programme as well as the squad accounts.

During a year out in 2001 after his A-levels he completed his ASA Club Coach Level 3 Certificate while only at 18 years old.

From 2002 to 2005 he attended Lincoln University to study Sports Development and Coaching while keeping his post at Nova Centurion. Simon moved to a full time position at Derventio Excel in March 2005 where he assists the Head Coach on a day to day basis and started his own group by June 2005.

In 2006, Simon completed his ASA Coach Level 4 qualification.
